TAXES

July 2nd 2010 13:57
So I overheard a discussion recently about taxes on a radio show listen to on the way home from work. The caller asked if the radio host though any taxes were fair. That got me to thinking and I thought I would put my thoughts here.

I think that the worst tax out there is the Estate/inheritance Tax. Throughout ones life, they pay taxes when they earn the money, when they buy things, and at other times. What happens when they die? They are taxed again. The radio host told of one family that about five generations ago purchased land in Texas (I think). I do not know the size but was several hundred acres. Because of the death tax, each generation had to sell of some of the family land to pay taxes when the property passed to the next generation. Is this the American dream? The government taking your family land? The only thing this family had done was to keep land in the family. It places a very high burden on the loved ones that are left.

The next tax that I have a problem with is the current income tax. Is it fair that people who make more are taxed at a higher percentage? I am not in the highest tax bracket by any means, but this does not sound fair. It is very socialist. But that is the way that many democrats think today. You have more then most so we "the government" will take it from you and give it to those who we see as needy. This is a total pant load!!!! The only way that I think an income tax would be fair is if it were a flat tax. In its purest form this would me that there would be a certain percentage, let’s say 20%, and that all citizens are charged. There are no exceptions and no way of getting around it. If you earn it there is a 20% tax on it.

The tax that i think is the best is a sales tax. I think that we should go to an all sales tax. It would benefit all, those with less money and those with more. Under this plan all money you make and break home is tax free. The place where you pay taxes is when you spend it. There would be a set national sales tax rate set on al items. This means that those families that can only afford food would only pay taxes on that. Those people that are able to but an airplane would have to pay taxes on that. It would shift the burden, in my opinion, to all people equally. If you don't way to pay the tax, don't buy the item.

The last tax I will address is the property tax. I don't agree with this tax either (I bet you are surprised). This is a tax just for owning something. This tax usually does not hurt younger people, but can really hurt those with fixed incomes, such as retired people. Someone works their entire life to pay off their house. They retire and are on a fixed income. Then the government comes along and says their house is worth more so their property tax goes up. If they can't afford it they loose the house they have spent their entire life paying off.

However, we still need the government to spend less, but I guess that is an article for a different day!!!

Please let me know what you think!!!
