Protecting the Border
May 27th 2010 13:49
So this week President Obama told of plans to send 1,200 troops to the border between Mexico and the United States. Wow, that's a lot of troops to help out.....oh wait it is not that many and there are limitations. The troops are not allowed to confront anyone crossing the border. They are only there to train border security personnel and to do surveillance!!!!!
The Mexican government has come out saying that they expect these troops will only be involved in the drug trafficking problem and not involved with anyone coming across the border illegally.
WHAT?!?!?!?!?!
This is exactly what I did not like about Bush's plan. President Bush sent about 6,000 troops to the border but with the same orders: to train and do surveillance.
We need the troops there and we need them to confront anyone they see crossing the border. If we do this we would immediately see major impacts in several areas.
First we would see a drop in the number of illegal people coming across the border. This is not racist or anything but we have to stop people from crossing our southern border.
Wikipedia had the breakdown of illegal immigrants in 2006 as follows:
Country of origin - Raw number - % of total - % change 2000 to 2006
Mexico-----------------6,570, 000-----------57%------------ ----69%
El Salvador--------------510,000 ------------4%--------------- ---9%
Guatemala---------------430,0 00------------4%------------- ----8%
Philippines---------------280 ,000------------2%----------- ------4%
Honduras-----------------280, 000------------2%------------ -----5%
India------------------------ 270,000------------2%-------- ---------5%
This shows that if someone is going to come into the country illegally, the chances are they will get here from the south.
Secondly, it will actually do something to help stop the drugs being brought into the United States. Although some drugs come in through plans and boats, and some are grown here, a large amount of the drugs come up from the south.
If we could stop this source of drugs it would greatly help the war against drugs.
Thirdly, it would make the citizens in these border states safer. By keeping the illegal people and drug traffickers out, those US citizens who live close to the border would be much safer. Although I am a fan of smaller government, I do believe that protecting its citizens is one of the things that government should do!!!
Not only would it make the people living close to the border safer, but Mexican gangs are popping up everywhere. These Mexican gangs usually start with someone from Mexico. Would this put an end to all gangs..no. There are gangs from other countries and races, but anything to combat gangs would be helpfully!!!
Finally, it would have governments save money. I don't have any numbers or statistics, but I know that governments spend billions educating, housing, keeping safe, prosecuting, and providing health care to illegal immigrants. This would be a good thing as many local governments’ budgets have been hit hard during this recession.
Another thing that I propose, besides securing the border, is to crack down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants....but I guess that is an article for another time.
