Is the Office of President a joke?

June 12th 2010 05:00
So I live in the United States. I admit I see things from a perspective that people in other countries may not. Growing up I have been taught that the office of President of the United States was a very important role and the person in it should be respected.

United States, President, Seal, Clinton, Obama, Bush
(From Wikipedia.org)

However, I find this harder to do as I grow older. Is this because I am getting older and realize more of what is going on, or are the Presidents of the United States me that, because of their actions, deserve less respect?

The list of Presidents while I have been alive is:

1) Jimmy Carter
2) Ronald Reagan
3) George H Bush
4) Bill Clinton
5) George W Bush
6) Barack Obama

I am going to take a quick look at each of them.

The first President, the one at office when I was born, is Carter. I think that Carter was an average President. He was not the brightest guy, but over all I don't think he did anything that disgraced the office or made the US look too stupid.

Second is Ronald Reagan. In my opinion he is by far the best President that has served since I have been alive. He was a man that people respected and brought honor ot the office. Even if you did not agree with all of his policies, he demanded your respect.

Thirdly, let’s look at the First George Bush. Although Bush served as Vice President under Reagan, he did not fill the shoes. He was not the commanding figure that Reagan was as President. However, I don not recall him doing anything that took away from the office.

Fourthly, Clinton came along. This was a huge step backwards. I am not talking about politically, but about honor. Clinton's office was always accused of scandal. He had sex in the White House with an intern. He may not call it sex, but it was. He lied about things like that and made the office of President look bad.

Fifthly, Bush the second made no great improvements, but did not make the office look bad. He had no major sex scandals as the previous President. There were those that made fun of the way he spoke, but I don't think that this in and of itself is bad. He may not have been the best speaker, but he was honest and did not get caught up in the scandals that Clinton got caught up in.

Finally is Obama. The jury is still out on him, but it appears that he is going to leave the prestige of the office in worse shape than when he took it. I think that he thinks he has the respect of great Presidents, like Reagan or Kennedy. But Obama has done nothing to demand respect like that.

Since there are readers from a variety of countries out there, I am interested in what you think about the office of President of the United States. Politics aside, is the office on that people in your country look up to? Is it demand more honor or less than it did years ago? Please tell me what you think about it!!!!!

There's a good article on Powerline about Obama and the office of the presidency:

Too Big Or Too Small?

It's like he thinks he's too important to be bothered with the actual task of being president.

Harry Truman was president when I was born, so have had quite a little time to witness the pattern of presidential behavior norms.

Each of them had their good and bad points, different personalities, and political variables. I can honestly say that the office of the president was respected, regardless of the man who held it.

Richard Nixon tarnished the title a bit, but not beyond repair. Jimmy Carter was a weak man who diminished both himself and the country with his foolish policies and failure to retrieve the hostages held in Iran. Ronald Reagan restored the honor of the USA with his optimism, wise policies and courage. Bill "the zipper" Clinton was a disgrace is several ways and brought the presidency down from one of respect to sexual antics. George W. Bush was an honest and decent man who replaced Clinton's shame with integrity and class. B.O. (B.S.) is a terrible president who can't make up his mind when urgent action is required. He whines, accuses, complains and dithers instead of stepping up to the proverbial plate and protecting the interests of the American people. Not to mention his insane spending habits and disrespect for the Constitution.
