BP Oil Spill
May 17th 2010 20:31
So the BP oil spill is big news that we in the US have been hearing about for weeks. I think that all would agree that this spill is very bad and will kill some sea life. I, however, suggest that there will be a bright side to this.
First of all let’s look at what has occurred in case there is anyone out there that does not know. BP was drilling an oil reserve in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010 there was an explosion and oil began flowing into the Gulf. BP has tried several options to "fix" the problem, but none have worked so far. As you can imagine, since the water there is about a mile deep, it is rather difficult.
BP first attempted to use a large multi-ton funnel to get the oil from the floor of the ocean to tanks on the surface. This immediately failed because the water in the funnel froze. Who would have thought that water a mile below the surface would freeze to metal? They then tried a smaller funnel and it did not work.
At the same time BP was looking at using the smaller dome, they were also preparing another plan. They decided to use robots to thread a smaller pipe into the broken oil pipe and siphon the oil up to the surface. This is so far working, but BP is only siphoning up a portion at this time. They plan to increase what they are siphoning, but are taking it slow so that the pipe is not clogged with ice crystals.
Here is a map showing where the oil spill is located and where the oil is.
I also failed to mention that the pipe that broke had fail save locks that were to lock the pipe so that the oil could not leak if a rupture occurred, but they did not work.
Although this is not a good thing, I venture to guess that there will be one, if not more business, that will become very rich by altering the way oil is pumped form the ocean. This is a public relations nightmare for BP and no other company wants this to happen. The free world uses disasters like this to adapt and invent so that next time it doe not occur. I believe that will be the case here also.
I also just heard that BP was going to blast mud and concrete into the hole and clog it up. They would then drill somewhere else into the oil reserve to get the oil. Why was this not done sooner?
